Parasail over Siesta Key

We had company this past weekend from California that wanted to experience parasailing. I can now say that I have tried it and LOVED it! What a fun way to spend the afternoon.

We called ahead and made a reservation with Siesta Key Parasailing (941-586-1972). Only 12 people can go out at a time so I would recommend calling first. We went later in the day which really paid off for us because we were the last boat out and because of that instead of a two hour trip, we spent almost five hours out on the water! Two water taxi’s took us all out to the main boat. The water taxi is a nice relaxing trip that lasts about half an hour if I had to guess (I was NOT looking at my watch). We were able to sight see a bit and just enjoy the breeze on a very hot day. Next time I’d bring water , by the end of the day I was parched!

Once we got on board the big boat we found out about the different packages they offer. Everyone in our boat choose the $85 plan which was 15 minutes up in the air and a sd card with about 20 photos. They took us up two or three at a time. The take off and landing was much smoother than I had imagined. After getting into lifejackets and the proper rigging we sat on the back off the boat and were slowly lifted in the air.

From 1000 feet up in the air we had fantastic views of Siesta Key. A few of the girls in the boat said they saw several dolphins from the air. We were amazed as we flew above the seagulls. It was so peaceful and breathtaking soaring up in the clouds. They dipped us in the water a few times before bringing us back on the boat. We didn’t have anyone that did not go up but if you have someone in your party that only wants to watch they do allow non-flying passengers for $20.

After our water taxis came back to pick us up from the boat we stopped a few times on nearby sand bars and jumped off the boat for a quick swim. We also saw several dolphins not too far and went to get a better close up view. What an awesome experience this was! I can honestly say this is something we will be doing again!

Not Your Typical Tex-Mex

If you are in the mood for Mexican food, Sarasota has several great venues ..the most recent place I’ve visited is Tijuana Flats on Clark Road. Less than 5 miles from Siesta Key.
The atmosphere is quirky and fun with wonderfully FUN art painted on the walls, 80′s tunes playing in the background and delicious food that does not disappoint! It is cafeteria style dining. You tell them what you want at the counter and pay and then they bring it out to your table. The service was superb. We were never waiting for our cups to be refilled and were checked on often.
The tables, chairs, floors and even restrooms were spotless.
I read that there will be live music Saturday with $2 Coronas! We may just have to make a trip back !
I didn’t have my camera but my cell phone captured a few pictures that I’ll share so you can see what a fun place this is!

Nature Safari Boat Trip

I have lived in Sarasota county for over 25 years but until today had never been on Mote Marine’s Nature Safari. It was amazing! My best friend from high school was here from Missouri visiting for the week and she booked us this wonderful boat ride. There were six of us. Three adults and three children,  we had the boat to ourselves along with the boat captain and his seven year old daughter and our wonderful marine biologist Sondra.

We started off with a short boat ride over to Lido Key for a very informative nature walk where we learned about many different types of trees, animals, and conditions of the grasslands, wetlands, uplands and tidal mangrove forests. Then we got back on board the boat and headed off to a sandbar. We got in the water with nets in hand to discover live shells, fish, crabs, sponges and a few other sea creatures. We got to spend about 45 minutes exploring and learning about the type of crabs, fish and sea life that were surrounding us.
On the cruise back Sondra explained in more detail the marine life we had collected on our safari. She was so patient with the kids and made sure to pass around the creatures for us to feel, smell and take pictures. The blue crab had to stay in the bucket because he looked pretty mad but other than that everyone had a great time!

The trip lasted about 2 1/2 hours. I would strongly suggest water shoes. I wore flip flops and found it very hard to walk around on the sandbar. The water only came up to my thighs but it was nice having a change of clothes after the boat trip so we could walk around Mote Marine after and not have wet clothes on.

There are other boat tours available as well, you can find out more information on their website at sarasotabayexplorers.com/sealife

We made a day of it and wandered around the aquarium and save the sea birds santuary. Some of my favorite things were the manatees and sea turtles!

Hands Across The Sand

Yesterday,I joined nearly 1000 people on Siesta Key beach for “Hands Across The Sand” a non-political protest against off shore drilling on our coasts. Saying NO to oil dependency and YES to clean energy.

It was a gorgeous day on the beach. The water was 90 degrees and I believe the air temperature was 95 but felt like 105. I know I was feeling like I could melt and that cool white sand was begging me to lay down on it.

The water was again crystal clear as it has been the last several times I’ve been to the beach this month.  There were very small waves but for the most part it was a calm day on the water. That may change with some up coming storms in our forecast but not for long.

Here are a few pictures from my day on the beach.

A Day At Casey Key Beach

Today I ventured down to Casey Key Beach in Nokomis. We manage a few properties there and I find it very peaceful and private.  Nokomis is a few miles south of Sarasota.

The water was crystal clear today. I saw a family of Manatees swim right in front of me! The fish were out in full force and swam very near to the shore which made some very interesting snorkeling! I wish I had an under water camera to share those pictures with you.

Today and tomorrow, anglers in Florida can fish for saltwater species without fishing licenses.  The state promotion, designed to change perceptions about Florida waters in the wake of the oil spill comes just in time for Father’s Day! I saw a lot of boats out on the water today with people fishing, so it must be working.

We’re a Favorite Place on Google!!

We got a letter in the mail this week from Google! Between December 1st and February 28th Home and Condo Rentals and Property Mgmt., Inc. (that’s us!) was one of the most popular local businesses on Google, as measured by how many times people found our business listing, and clicked on it for more information.

We are one of less than $250,000 businesses in the U.S. to receive this recognition, that’s less than 1% of all U.S. businesses!

We now have a sticker on our door from Google that includes a special bar code-known as a QR code-that potential customers may scan with cameras on their smartphones. When they scan the code, they’ll put up a mobile version of the Place Page for our business, where they can read reviews or add us as a favorite. To see a short video on how this works and for more information go to http://www.google.com/help/maps/favoriteplaces/business/

Drum Circles

Drum Circle Video

Every week there are drum circles at sunset on the local beaches. Siesta Key has one on Sunday nights, Nokomis Beach has them on Wednesday and Saturday and now Venice Beach has one on Monday nights.

I have only been to the Nokomis one so far. Saturday seems to attract more people than the Wednesday night gathering.  Every Time I have company from out of town we take them to at least one drum circle.  It is a very relaxing and fun thing to do. We usually pack up a cooler , grab some beach chairs and take off  for a few hours of pure relaxation.

There are dozens of people that arrive with big beautiful drums, some with tamberines and other musical instruments. They form a large circle in the sand. In the center there is dancing, some chanting, children playing with hula hoops, belly dancers, and you never know what else you will see!

I’ve heard that the circle was started as a celebration of the sun. A way of thanking the spirits for another beautiful day here.  There is just something magical about watching the sun slip into the water while listening to the beat of the drums and the sounds of birds, children and surf around you.

You should arrive before sunset, usually about an hour is good so you can find a seat and soak up the energy of the night. Almost as soon as the sun goes down and the darkness slips in, people gather their belongings and leave the beaches.

I’ve taken quite a few videos and pictures various drum circles I’ve gone to over the years. I can honestly say I’ve never had a bad time at the beach!

No Oil on Our Beaches!

If you’ve watched the news at all lately I am sure you’ve seen the oil covered birds and beaches and even talk of the oil reaching Florida beaches.  Let me start by saying WE HAVE NO OIL on our white sandy beaches here in Sarasota County. Had to get that out there in case you don’t read the rest of the blog.

We just had friends visit us from Oregon and were surprised to hear that when they told their friends they were coming to see us 90% of them said “why would you want to go to a beach with tarballs.”  The media is not our friend. It is very similar to hurricane season. If a hurricane is any where near Florida people think the entire state is being blown away.

As someone that lives here and depends on tourism to make a living we are constantly watching what is going on in the gulf. I spent all last weekend on the beaches with my company. I smelled the sand, looked at every black rock , watched the pretty white birds fly by and felt sad for all that has changed for the people in areas that the oil has struck.

If you are worried about your vacation plans I suggest looking into insurance plans. Unfortunately, man-made disasters are not a covered reason to cancel or interrupt your trip.  Therefore, the only kind of trip cancellation plan you can get that will cover you at all is one with the “Cancel for any reason” coverage. Keep in mind that it’s a “Cancel For Any Reason” and not “Interrupt For Any Reason” plan.  Be sure to research your options with an agent. One I found online was http://www.tripinsurancestore.com/

If you would like to follow the progress on the deepwater horizon response here is a link to their facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/DeepwaterHorizonResponse?v=wall

We will be posting daily updates about our beaches on our Beach Conditions page: Click Here for updates.  As for yesterday, the water was warm (88 degrees I believe) the sun was even warmer (90 degrees) and the sand was white and cool as ever!  Welcome to June!

Tips on Furnishing a Seasonal Rental Property

I thought I would take some time now that the rush of our busy season (Jan, Feb, March, April) is over and cover a few pointers for people considering renting out their property on a seasonal basis.

If you keep in mind a few very important factors it will make decorating and furnishing your rental a breeze.

Think about what you would like when you stay away from home; good quality sheets, a comfortable bed, plenty of towels, etc. Last October I stayed at a hotel in Tampa for my birthday and will definitely make a return visit to that hotel because of the very comfortable mattress. I have found that the nicer the places are furnished the more friendly the guests are if something goes wrong.

Before property management I owned a consignment furniture store and would hear over and over “It’s just a rental property, I don’t care what I put in there”, or, “I don’t want to spend a lot of money because the tenants will not take care of it”. I am sure there are horror stories out there but I have found that most of the seasonal tenants have very nice homes up north and they are spending a lot of money to stay in our tropical paradise.  If you furnish your place like a garage sale reject they will move on to the next place where the owner took the time and effort to make their home more inviting. I am not suggesting that you buy top of the line, new everything. As a second hand business we got in some very beautiful furniture and it sold for much less than you’d find in a new furniture store. Sarasota and Venice both have some wonderful second hand furniture stores.

Another suggestion that I have is to send or leave a welcome basket for when the tenants arrive. We have several of our owners that do this or have us do this. It makes the new tenant feel welcome and it personalizes their stay. It becomes more of someones “home” they are renting and not just a hotel. We leave guest books in all of our properties and encourage our guests to leave comments about what they enjoyed doing while they were here. The front of the book is a good place to suggest local dining favorites and a little about yourself.

Extra cleaning supplies and toiletries are appreciated by everyone. Tenants are more likely to keep the home clean if they have the supplies to do it. Who packs cleaning supplies in their vacation luggage? Our cleaning teams do leave paper towels, toilet paper and trash bags but extra supplies would be a wonderful idea.

Keep your units up to date. Siesta Key is tropical and the pastels of the 80′s will always be in style because it is in our landscape here, but when that sofa starts looking a little tired it is time for a make over. The goal is to get the guests to want to return over and over. I know personally that if a unit was looking worn and tired I would not come back to that unit, I’d ask for something else the next time. Comfortable chairs, plenty of cooking supplies (pots, pans, cookie sheets, etc) are also important when furnishing a seasonal rental. Plastic cups are great for beach days, but keep in mind that some of our guests may plan to entertain while they are here and will need a little nicer set of glasses and dishes for company. We suggest a serving set of at least 8 for dishes, silver ware, etc.

Something I’ve done that has helped my bedroom furniture stay looking new much longer was having glass tops cut to fit on my night stands and dresser. It is not very expensive and it saves your wood furniture from “rings” if a wet glass is set on them. Table cloths and place mats are great ideas as well for the dining room/kitchen table.

I hope that you’ve found my suggestions helpful. Happy May ya’ll..time to get geared up for our summer crowd!
